Marcin Detyniecki est chargé de recherche première classe au CNRS depuis janvier 2002. Depuis sa thèse il travaille, en alternance avec des séjours à l’étranger, au Laboratoire d’Informatique (LIP6) de l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC). Avant son DEA en Intelligence Artificielle, il a suivi en parallèle des études en physique et en mathématiques appliquées à l’UPMC. C’est dans cette même université qu’il a soutenu sa thèse en 2000. Il est habilité à diriger des recherches depuis 2006, par l’UPMC et par l’Académie des Sciences de Pologne. Au cours de sa carrière professionnelle, il a été personnel de recherche de l’Université de Californie à Berkeley (2000-2001) et de l’Université Carnegie Mellon aux Etats-Unis (2009-2010), ainsi que chercheur invité à l’Université de Florence, en Italie, (2005) et au centre de recherche Adastral Park de British Telecom au Royaume Uni (2005).
Son domaine de recherche se situe entre le cadre théorique de l’intelligence artificielle et son application à des défis liés au fossé entre signal et sémantique. La problématique qu’il considère vise à répondre à la question de savoir comment faire pour qu’une machine soit capable d’apprendre (ou de gérer) les relations qui existent entre la description numérique d’un signal brut (provenant d’une image ou d’un capteur par exemple) et le sens qu’on donne à ce signal ? Le spectre des nouvelles technologies qu’il développe est large, se matérialisant sous forme d’applications dans des domaines allant de l’assistance aux personnes à l’aide à la décision en finance en passant par des moteurs de recherche visuels et mobiles. Les résultats théoriques qu’il a obtenus (parmi lesquels on peut citer par exemple l’impossibilité de neutralité dans des systèmes logiques graduels, heuristiques performantes à optimalité garantie pour l’isomorphisme inexact de graphes) ont été à l’origine de plusieurs conférences invitées et de participation à des panels internationaux. Les solutions techniques qu’il a apportées ont été bien classées dans les compétitions internationales (organisées par NIST, Evaluation Forum CLEF) et ont également été déployées (par exemple sur le site de la Tate Gallery de Londres). Marcin Detyniecki est l’auteur plus de 85 publications dans des revues et des conférences internationales. Il a également édité sept livres et un numéro spécial de journal. Il est rapporteur régulier pour des journaux en intelligence artificielle et en multimédia.
