The main topic of this thesis is problem solving. We are interested in scholastic problems, in domains in which terms of the problems evoke concrete situations, whereas the lesson is given in theoretical terms. Pupils have trouble with this kind of problems because they often cannot model these situations in order for them to use the theoretical lesson. We wish to model the solving process that the pupil should use after learning. Therefore, we must distinguish knowledge intended to model the problem from knowledge intended to solve a modelled problem. We thus wish to realize in each domain a problem solver intended to be used by an Intelligent Tutoring System.
In order to build a new model of the proposed problem, to which we will be able to apply solving knowledge of the lesson, a method consists in using a classification of problems to guide this reformulation of the problem. Our work propose, on the one hand, a general framework in which we can make explicit in a declarative way a classification of problems, and the reformulating and solving knowledge associated, and on the other hand a mechanism of utilization of this knowledge. We have realized the SYRCLAD system, in which we implemented these aspects, and we have tested this system on four domain : first for counting exercises for twelve graders, we have also been interested in a classification of additive word problems encountered in primary school. We have also applied the system to an expertise for plan choosing in the card game tarot. The last domain tested is that of thermodynamics exercises for first year university students. SYRCLAD builds a new model of the proposed problem thanks to reformulation knowledge and using a classification graph of the domain problems. This new model is more operational and is instance of a problem class belonging to the graph. The system uses the solving knowledge associated to this class in order to find the problem solution.
