Titre / Title: An Architecture to Integrate Distributed Multimedia Applications
Abstract : The aim of this paper is to describe an architecture which integrates distributed multimedia applications into one single distributed multimedia system. This system is studied using the Open Distributed Processing framework, an emerging standard for distributed system design. This framework enables the study of the system from the user requirements up to the technological support.
Putting the emphasis on the multimedia aspect of such a distributed multimedia system, we answer the following questions: what are the characteristics of such applications? What are the user's requirements and policies? Which information do they handle and exchange? How to integrate distributed multimedia applications into one integrated system? What are the common mechanisms they require from the supporting infrastructure? And finally, how could those mechanisms be implemented on high speed networks.
In order to illustrate the discussion, this paper then presents some prototypes and products that could be integrated in our system like multimedia messaging and joint editors. The conclusion indicates the areas that need to be studied further to get a complete distributed multimedia architecture.
