Titre / Title: Finite semigroups as categories, ordered semigroups or compact semigroups

Résumé : Cet article paraîtra dans les actes de la "Clifford Conference", organisée à la mémoire du professeur A.H. Clifford à Tulane (Nouvelle Orléans) en avril 1994 . Il s'agit d'un article de synthèse qui met l'accent sur quelques développements récents de la théorie des semigroupes, qui ont en point commun d'avoir requis des outils mathématiques extérieurs à la théorie des semigroupes: topologie, ordres partiels et catégories. On présente en particulier le théorème de Reiterman qui permet de définir les variétés de semigroupes finis par identités, l'extension du théorème des variétés d'Eilenberg aux semigroupes ordonnés et les théorèmes d'expansion de semigroupes pour lesquels les catégories, considérées comme objets algébriques, forment le bon cadre d'étude.

Abstract : This article will appear in the proceedings of the "Clifford Conference", organized in the memory of Professor A.H. Clifford in Tulane (New Orleans) in april 1994. This is a survey article reviewing some recent developments of the theory of semigroups that share the property to have required auxiliary mathematical tools: topology, partial orders and categories. The topics covered in this paper include Reiterman's theorem on the definition by identities of varieties of finite semigroups, the extension of Eilenberg's variety theorem to ordered semigroups and the theorems on semigroup expansions for which categories, considered as algebraic objects) form the appropriate framework.
