Résumé : Il s'agit des notes d'un cours donné par l'auteur à l'University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On y considère les mots inévitables et les identités, et leurs applications aux problèmes de Burnside dans les semigroupes, les groupes et les algèbres associatives. On y trouvera les preuves de théorèmes de Thue, Bean-Ehrenfeucht-McNulty, Zimin, Nagata-Higman,
Shirshov, Golod et d'autres. Certaines de ces preuves sont nouvelles.

Abstract : This is the course notes of the course given by the author at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We consider avoidable words and identities and applications of them to Burnside problems in semigroups, groups and associative algebras. The notes contain proofs of theorems by Thue, Bean-Ehrenfeucht-McNulty, Zimin, Nagata-Higman, Shirshov, Golod and others. Some of these proofs are new.
