Titre / Title: Knomedge acquisition and explanation for diagnosis in contexte
Abstract : This report, which is submitted in a review, describes the use of context in problem solving with knowledge-based systems. It describes how context can be represented, reasoned with, explained and acquired. It also describes how context can be used to better represent, reason with, explain and incrementally acquire knowledge. Three different real-world diagnostic applications are described to illustrate the practical application of context. The three applications are: the troubleshooting of an aircraft engine using the Jet Engine Troubleshooting Assistant (JETA), the J85-CAN-15 powers the CF-5 trainer of Canadian Forces pilots; the diagnosis and explanation through simulation of power plants using SEPT at Electricité France, and the diagnosis of a Xerox workstation using RATIONALE. A method of incremental knowledge acquisition is presented as a cooperation between a user who is a domain expert and the system. For the system to succeed in incrementally acquiring knowledge, it must represent, reason with and explain context.
